fire_update.jpg The Joint Operations Centre (JOC) at Eden District Municipality is still activated, and a follow-up JOC meeting will be convened on 6
November 2017 at 10:30 am.

This morning the weather was clear and favourable for a reconnaissance flight take place and assess the areas in the district affected by wildfires.

There are currently three (3) active fires and nine (9) hotspots where mopping-up operations are in progress.  Priority areas for today include Molen River, Kubuku and De Vlught.

Firefighters currently deployed in the district include:
•    7 from Eden District Municipality
•    25 from Mountain to Ocean (MTO)
•    123 from WoF   
•    15 from Cape Nature
•    40 from PG Bison

Role players at the Eden DM JOC include Eden District Municipality, SANParks, WoF, Cape Nature, MTO and PG Bison.

Mr Gerhard Otto, Incident Commander, in his closing at today’s JOC meeting said that: “Without the farmers working together and assisting all firefighters, we would have struggled to contain the wildfires that raged through the district since 1 November 2017.”

Editor’s note:
•    The standard shift per firefighting team is 12 hours.
•    Mopping-up is extinguishing any burning embers to ensure that an area which has burned, is safe. This could continue for a period of up to 48 hours after the last open flames.
