Friday, 09 June 2017

To address the potable water shortage of community members in rural areas of Oudtshoorn, the Eden DM Executive Mayor, Cllr Memory Booysen, was requested by the Oudtshoorn Executive Mayor, Cllr Colan Sylvester, to assist with funding and provision of plastic water tanks. Tanks will be used by the Oudtshoorn Technical Services for roll-out to areas where communities experience urgent water needs.
One of the beneficiaries of water tanks is Pierewiet Primary School in Volmoed who received a water tank on 5 June 2017.

The idea is to fill these tanks with water initially and to link these tanks to rainwater harvesting systems later.

During December 2016 and January 2017 the Oudtshoorn Municipal area experienced significant veldt fires in the main water catchment areas for both De Rust, as well as rural communities near Oudemuragie. These fires were followed by an extremely dry period, that resulted in the area being declared a local drought disaster area.
