Authorities have announced that repairs will soon be starting on the R339 Poort road, connecting Uniondale with Avontuur and Haarlem

This important artery road, which was damaged during the 2007 floods, has till now officially been closed to the public, forcing road users to make a more than 15 km bypass over the Potjiesberg Pass along the N9 road to get to Uniondale from Avontuur.  According to Mr Japie Strydom, from Eden Roads, the Provincial Government has announced a process to appoint a service provider for repairs which are estimated at R 40 million.  A public information meeting and site inspection has already been held, with the tender for this project set to be closing on the 12th June 2009. A decision is expected shortly thereafter on the appointment of a service provider. Mr. Harry Viljoen, from the Provincial Roads, confirmed that the construction is estimated to take nine month from the commencement of the construction.  Not only will local communities and tourist benefit from better road infrastructure, but jobs will also be created by this R40 million injection.
